Le estoy muy agradecido por haberme mandado su muy interesante revista Amauta. Le mandamos incluso un billete americano de $2.–– para la suscripción. Mándenos todos los números que habrán aparecido desde el primer número.
Siento mucho que Ud. no nos ha respuesto a nuestra carta pidiéndole su colaboración y particularmente un artículo sobre las aspiraciones y el movimiento de los indígenas. Vd. en Lima también me ha prometido mandarme estos números del Mundial en los que aparecen o aparecieron sus artículos.
Le ruego mandarme un recibo para la contabilidad.

Señor Llanos has sent me the review containing your splendid and generous article on —I will not say my work— but on my intentions, at least. I do not know how to thank you for this tribute. I have already read work of yours in various periodicals; and my respect for you makes me the more humble before this gracious salute from South America. I cannot feel, that I have altogether failed, when this kind of thing is given me. Life here in “Yanquilandia” is very very hard for the artist, for the man who deliberately sets himself against the most stupendously successful materialistic movement in all history. But life is not hopeless. Such words as yours are the Manna which enable me to survive in what I often, when I am weary and disheartened, feel to be the Desert of our age. Thank... Deeply, deeply, my thanks...

Dear friend,
I wrote you some time ago, telling you with what delight I have been reading Amauta. It is a remarkable magazine; and I have a very real sense of the importance of the work you are doing. It means a good deal to me, to be able to count you among my friends.
I noticed with pleasure that you have been publishing certain chapters of my Re-Discovery of America. I am glad that you considered it worth publishing. I shall have to ask you, however, to cease these publications. I am trying to sell the Spanish rights of this book to a newspape— and I cannot afford to lose the possibility of earning this money, through the appearance in Amauta in which I receive no pay. Will you kindly tell Sr. Garro (whose address I do not have) that I thank him for his interest; that I am delighted to know that he is translating Our America for Glusberg of Buenos Aires but that I hope he is not translating any more parts of the new book?
Do let me hear from you. It is a long long time since I have had a letter from you, personally. I wonder indeed if you received my last one. And I shall be wondering if this word reaches you, until you assure me.

Querida madre:

Ayer he recibido carta tuya. A pesar de encontrarla muy lacónica la he leído con mucho gusto, sobretodo porque me anuncia que tú y todos mis hermanos están perfectamente bien. Siento mucho que Juan no estuviese aún restablecido y espero que cuando esta llegue a casa ya se encuentre bien.

Del Aguila me ha escrito y me ha proporcionado una gran alegría al decirme que esta muy a gusto en casa y muy contento del trato de ustedes.

Mañana salgo para París. Aquí he tenido que estarme más de veinte días por falta de barco. Recientemente ha habido una gran huelga de trabajadores de los muelles que ha impedido la salida de los vapores. Mas de veinte mil pasajeros nos hemos encontrado detenidos por esta causa. Felizmente yo he encontrado pasaje en un de los primeros busque van a zarpar para Europa.

El dieciocho o veinte de este mes estaré en París. Quince o veinte días más me trasladaré a Madrid. Al llegar a España espero encontrar carta tuya.

A ti, a cada de uno de mis hermanos, a Juan y a Del Aguila les mando una álbum de vistas de Nueva York. Hubiese querido mandarles objetos de más valor, pero todo, hasta lo más insignificante, cuesta aquí muy caro. En París, me parece, que las cosas serán más baratas y podré mandarles algo bonito, a menos que me desmonetice en el viaje. En este caso, el regalo irá de Madrid.

Dale a Del Aguila dos libras para que cumpla un encargo que le he hecho. Como supongo que te harán falta para tus gastos, oportunamente te mandaré una carta y un recibo para que cobres los artículos que estoy escribiendo para "El Tiempo" y te reembolses.

Del Aguila me dice que la […] para Humberto está a punto de conseguirse. Avísame lo que haga al respecto para, si es necesario, escribirle a algunas personas.

Besa a todos mis hermanos, saluda a Juan y a Del Aguila, y tu recibe un abrazo de hijo.
